When the Department of Transportation (DOT) asked us to help them out on a project that was in the best interest of the community, our team leapt into action. The DOT had a failing culvert that crossed Route 310 in Canton and, in order to make the needed repairs, one of our gas lines needed to be moved.
Moving and replacing the pipeline was no easy task, as our team encountered protected wetlands, hard rock where we needed to drill, a property easement, and a tight timeline. Not only did Liberty overcome those obstacles, but we did it with no service interruptions to customers.
The original eight-inch pipeline was installed in 1990 to support the former cogeneration plant (Megan-Racine Cogeneration Plant). Although that plant has been closed since the late 1990s, the village of Canton has seen a lot of growth, thereby necessitating that we replace the old pipe with a new eight-inch pipe that could continue meeting the needs of our customers in the area.
The team was able to install a new main beneath the protected wetland by horizontal directional drill. The new main was tied into the existing main using line stopper fittings to keep gas flowing to customers. The line stopper fittings were used to isolate the existing main and remove it so the DOT could complete their work.
Combining collaboration with government organizations, teamwork, problem solving, and ingenuity lead to a successful result that will benefit our customers and the community we serve for years to come.
